Sweet Sisters Flower Stencil

July 25, 2019

Hey everyone.  I’m a huge fan of Rita Barakat and all her mix media glory.  I have the pleasure of sharing a watercolored Sweet Sisters Flower stencil card with you today.  Now I will admit mix media scares me just a little as I’m never sure I’m doing it right however this stencil was so easy to use and the results are gorgeous every single time.  So let’s get started on the process of my card.

I started off with cold press watercolor paper and traced the Sweet Sisters Flower stencil image using a fine black multi-liner marker.  Once I had it traced I connected the line to create the full face for my card.  Now when you do this, it image really comes to life right before your eyes.  Therefore you can easily color the image with pencils, markers or like me watercolor.

The paints I used today I purchased off of Amazon a few months ago.  You can checkout the review here.  Creating this image I needed to start with the skin complexion and then move forward.  I mixed together a light and medium brown and added lots of water to get a lighter version I could do a color wash with.  Continuing to add layers by drying in between each coat, I achieved the complexion I wanted for this piece. Next I decided to add some blush to her checks in a light watered down red shade.  I heat set then before I moved one.

It was now time to add the rest of her makeup by applying a light coral shade to her eyes,  a hot reddish pink to her lips and super long eyelashes. For her eyes I used several shades of brown as I truly believe our eyes are not just one color. Adding eyelashes with a multi-liner pen made them pop.  I also used the same pen to add hair like strokes in her eyebrows.

Her hair was the last part to complete along with the little flowers. I mixed together browns and reds to get a light burgundy color wash.  I laid down a quick wash of color and let it dry.  Next I came in with brown and light red streaks of color to add movement and dimension to her hair.  I kept the flowers simple in color so they would not compete with the over image of this girl.  The last step was to add some clear glaze over her eyes and lips. Staying with a simple sentiment was the perfect way to finish off this card.

Here is a closeup of the finished image and I must say I love how this card came out. Having completed this card I may have just conquered my fear of stepping into the mix media world after all.  I can’t wait to work with this Sweet Sisters Flower stencil again.
